I am trying to build up a complete picture of the history, owners and millers at Tilty water and windmill and would be very interested to hear from anyone who may be able to help. You can contact me at darren@stone09.freeserve.co.uk I am also looking at the history of the now gone Broxted, Lindsell and Great Easton windmills and Little Easton Watermill. Also the Davey family of millers (Wethersfield and Broxted and Little Easton) from the 19th century. Thanks in advance. DIRECTIONS Google Map/Directions http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?om=1&cd=1&sspn=8.17155,20.786133&spn=0.131095,0.324783&iwloc=addr&z=12&ie=UTF8&t=h&f=q&hl=en&sll=53.098145,-2.443696&q=Tilty,+Essex,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.912085,0.313797From Great Dunmow, Essex, follow the B184 signposted towards Thaxted, go past Great Easton and turn left on a sharp bend to Duton Hill. Go through Duton Hill, past the three horseshoes pub, and turn left at the bottom of the hill. Tilty is then signposted, turn right after about half a mile and then first right to Tilty Church. Park in the church car park and then a footpath runs from the gate in the car park, over the abbey field, the site of the now long gone Tilty Abbey (cistercian), and as you go through a wooden gate to go out of the abbey field the mill is directlty in front of you. The footpath continues past the mill to nearby woodland. NOTE-The mill is private property and IS NOT open to the public. However you can still appreciate it from the footpath. Tilty church is also well worth a visit, the beautiful east window dominates the church, once the abbey gate chapel but now the parish church for Tilty and Duton Hill.
