Tilty Watermill is a very rare example of a complete 18th century watermill still standing in the tiny village of Tilty in North west Essex, England. I am still tracing the origins of the current mill but it has been suggested that the current building dates from the late 18th century. There is evidence of a watermill being first built near the current site by the cistercian monks of Tilty Abbey in approx 1220. Soon after the dissolution of the monastries by Henry VIII the Abbey lands passed to the Maynard family of the nearby Easton Lodge Estate and remained in their possesion until sold in 1919. Various millers are documented over the years as follows. NOTE this list is not comprehensive-This is very much a work in progress. 1733 John PERRY 1749 Joseph HAWES (NOTE-Listed as miller of both Tilty water and windmill by 1775 will of Charles, Lord Viscount Maynard). 1812 Charles DAVEY (?) 1813 John WEBB (Senior) The same John Webb who built Thaxted's famous Tower windmill. 1830 John WEBB (Junior) 1863 John BRAND 1870 George SMITH 1874 Hofgaard SMITH (Noted as milling by water and Steam in the 1894 Kellys directory of Essex). 1908 George SMITH 1912 Henry Percy BLYTH 1933 R.CHANNING Note-The Main wheel is quoted as last turning in 1957.
