More news and updates to follow..

I have been looking into another interesting aspect of Tilty Mills history-its connections with an impressive literary and artistic circle in the late 1940's and 50's.
It seems that scottish poet and novelist Ruthven Todd owned Tilty Mill House.(Not the mill), in the late 1940's.

After getting a position at the university of New York he moved to the USA in 1947.
So Tilty Mill House was empty. Through friends it was let to arguably its most famous literary resident Elizabeth Smart and her young family.

Smarts masterpiece was 'By grand central station i sat down and wept'.
Her circle at Tilty Mill included the poet George Barker
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Barker_(poet)
And also scottish painters Robert Colquhun and Robert MacBryde.

Apparently the poet and playwright Louis MacNiece lived next door!

Tilty mill was still working in the early 50's and in Christopher Barkers book, The Arms of the Infinite' there are chapters devoted to their life at Tilty Mill and a very nice picture of the last Miller at Tilty.

Who would have thought Tilty Mill had such famous residents?
